Kicking for Carteret Kids

This year's Kick-a-Thon was a success! Students performed 97,799 kicks during our Kicking for Carteret Kids event on March 4 and raised $2,730 for the Nature School and scholarship programs at Camp Albemarle. Thank you students, families and our sponsors: Rise Radiantly with Martha, Cox Family Ice Cream, Pita Plate, Clarkspoon, Carteret County Speedway, Debbie Fisher-Mary Kay, Making Memories Photography by Amy Montuori, and Chick-fil-A Morehead City.
The prize winners for 1st to reach 5,000 kicks (or most kicks), in their age category were: Matthew B. (4-6), Landon T. (7-10), Dylan L. (11-15), Cameron T. (20-39), Mark L. (40+).
With tired legs, a tie was negotiated between the three with the most kicks. Pearce O, Dylan L, and Laurel H. each performed 11,111 kicks.

Valentine’s Classes
Valentine's Classes were a big hit! It was a great time to share class with loved ones and make some special memories together.

Parent’s Date Night
Students played games, watched a movie and enjoyed pizza and ice cream at our Valentine's Parent's Night Out event.

Power Breaking Seminar
Some of our students had the opportunity to learn Power Breaking tips and techniques from World Champion and World Record Holder Parker Moody at our seminar. It was so awesome to see these students challenge themselves as they all set new personal records with breaks. Hearing their classmates and the spectators cheer them on made for a very positive and uplifting experience!

Halloween Fun
Halloween week was full of fun!  Students enjoyed wearing their favorite accessories to our Glow Classes while learning self-defense in low-light situations.  Children and adults alike wore their favorite costume to class in our Annual Costume Class.

St. Patrick’s Day Classes

Welcome Instuctor Ale
We would like to welcome Alexandra Cox to our team. Alé, a second degree black belt, has been training with us for six years. She has received several letters of recognition and appreciation from Grandmaster for her contributions to the martial arts and her community. The oldest of three sisters, Alé also enjoys cooking, volunteering at church and community events and is looking forward to being part of the team!

Karate-thon for Children’s Hospital
Students had a great time at our Karate-thon on November 6 to benefit the Children's Hospital Foundation. They earned points for forms, sparring, board breaking, and knowledge questions. Our event was held in conjunction with other events at schools teaching Grandmaster Dong's system. It is amazing what we can do together! Grandmaster's instructors were happy to present a check to the Children's Hospital Foundation for $74,697 raised at this year's events.

Star Wars Camp  August 2021 - We finished off our summer with a Camp set in a Galaxy Far, Far Away! There were galactic visitors, arts and crafts and themed martial arts lessons. May the Force Be With You this school year!

Kick-a-Thon Benefits Local Kids
March 20, 2021 - Our Kick-a-Thon to benefit the Carteret Partnership for Children raised $6,123. Students performed 131,807 kicks during the event with 7,777 kicks being the most performed by one student. We know that this money will go a long way to benefitting children in our community!

Welcome Instructor Gabriel  We are excited to announce that we have added a new Instructor to our team. Gabriel has been taking martial arts with us since he was 6 years old and is now a 3rd Degree Black Belt. During his free time he enjoys playing lacrosse and beach volleyball.

Over 1,000 Virtual Private Lessons during COVID Our awesome team has taught more than 1,000 virtual private classes in addition to Live classes, and educational videos since the stay-at-home-order. Thank you to our members and staff for keeping some normalcy during this time.

Helicopter Egg Drop & Spring Festival

We were proud to sponor the helicopter egg drop at this year’s Spring Festival at Camp Albemarle.   Families enjoyed a variety of activities, games, food, vendors, a toddler egg hunt and the helicopter egg drop.

Master Shannon had a great time doing two presentations at the Down East Library (@carteretpublib) this morning! Libraries Rock has been the theme for their Summer Reading program and this group definitely rocked at learning some beginner martial arts. They also got to hear “Ninja Red Riding Hood” by Corey Rosen Schwartz.

Dancing With Our Stars
We enjoyed being a part of the Dancing With Our Stars event again this year. It was a great night with friends, watching the dancers and raising money for local children through Carteret Smart Start. Master Henry and daughter, Laurel, where among the judges this year. Our school's own, Arlene Baker and George Craft opened the event with a routine that mixed dance and martial arts (knives) and raised over $5,000 for local hildren programs.

The 2016-17 School Spirit award was awarded to Grandmaster Dong’s Martial Arts of Morehead City during the Children’s Hospital Charity Tournament on June 3.

We enjoyed having children from the Carteret County Parks & Recreation - Ft. Benjamin join us for martial arts this afternoon during their Spring Break Camp.

Tax Day Bag Bash
Adults and guests took part in our annual Tax Day Bag Bash to get out some of those frustrations at tax time.  The 30 minute workout surely did just that!



Light It Up Blue" for Autism Awareness Month

Dancing With Our Stars 2017
Master Henry and Laurel's performed in the Dancing With Our Stars fundraising event hosted by the Carteret County Partnership for Children’s.  All proceeds benefit local, early childhood education prgrams.  Laurel performed theatrical ballet while Master Henry performed a compilation of 3 martial arts forms.  They won the event overall by raising the most money, nearly $12,000, and also won the Audience Choice Award.

Grandmaster Dong inducted into Hall of Fame
Grandmaster Dong was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame on December 3. He received the award for his "Technical Advancement" of the martial arts. The event was hosted by the US Taekwondo & Martial Arts Grandmasters Federation.  Other Grandmasters receiving the Hall of Fame awards at the Washington, D.C. banquet were: Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee,  Grandmaster Myung Hak Kang, Grandmaster Chun-jae Park PHD, Grandmaster Eunggil Choi, Grandmaster Tiger Yang.  View the Facebook album or watch the video below.

Self-Defense at Duke University Marine Lab

Master Henry and Instructor Shannon taught a self-defense class to under-grads at Duke Marine Lab on February 13.  Along with the physical techniques, they discussed how to stay safe at home, away, and in the cloud.  Students also got to break their fisrt board.



Field Trip for Partnership for Children

Our school hosted 2 field trips for the Carteret County Partnership for Children on Tuesday, January 24.  After the kids learned some fun martial arts moves, Instructor Shannon read them the book The Three Ninja Pigs.

Students and guests participated in the Mannaquin Challenge between classes on Thursday, November 17.  The goal was to have everyone freeze in place at the same time while taking the video.

Self-defense Seminar for Chick-fil-A 

Staff members of the Chick-fil-A in Morehead City joined us for a self-defense seminar on July 12.  After learning some techniques, they learned to break a board.

Girl Scouts Get a Kick Out of Safety Seminar

Carteret County Girl Scouts enjoyed self-defense seminars on Saturday, May 11.  Five age-specific classes were offered for Girl Scouts ranging in age from 5 to 16.  Subjects included situational awareness, stranger, telephone, Internet safety and bully prevention, as well as dating safety for the older girls.  The Girl Scouts received both lecture and hands-on application of safety techniques.  Each of the girls also received a custom badge for the completion of their class.                                      Read official press release

Instructor Elected to CCPC Board

Instructor Shannon Henry was elected to the Board of Directors for the Carteret County Partnership for Children.  The Partnership "is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to serving children from birth through age 5.  The programs are funded by local donors  The Carteret Community Foundation and Smart Start.  The Partnership provides or funds "many programs that promote Smart Start's mission of helping all children in NC enter school healthy, motivated and ready to succeed."

Ms. Henry also serves on the Board of Directors for Shape Carteret, a non-profit whose mission is "To build a better community by promoting healthy eating and active living.”  For more information , visit www.carteretkids.org

College Scholarship Awarded
